You might enter data in an Excel file, and then reenter it again in another file to be used in a different way. Entering data this way does not ensure that you are always looking at the most current information – if data changes in one file, it may not have been updated in the second file. Creating external references in Excel allows you to link to values in one or more Excel files, and then update those values with the click of a button.

When creating external references, you work with a source file and a destination file. You use the Edit Links dialog box to manage references to external sources. This dialog box allows you to update values, open and change sources, as well as break links to source files.

In this training session, you will learn how to:

  • Create a reference to an Excel file using the Paste Link option.
  • Create formulas that link to different worksheets in the same file.
  • Create formulas that link to worksheets in external files.
  • Manage links using the Edit Links dialog box.

This training session is geared toward the user who is already familiar with creating basic formulas in Excel. Please join us!
