Excel 2016 logoA formula performs calculations on values in your worksheet. It can be a sequence of values, cell references, names, functions, or operators. In the “Creating Basic Formulas” training session, you learned the basics of building a math formula in Excel. We will take that a step further in “More Excel Formulas.”

In this workshop, you will create formulas using the following functions:

  • IF function: The IF function returns one value if a condition you specify evaluates to TRUE, and another value if that condition evaluates to FALSE.
  • SUMIF function: You use the SUMIF function to sum the values in a range that meet criteria that you specify.
  • SUMIFS function: The SUMIFS function adds the cells in a range that meet multiple criteria.
  • VLOOKUP function: You can use the VLOOKUP function to search the first column of a range of cells, and then return a value from any cell on the same row of the range.

To help create these functions, you will learn how to use the Insert Function tool, which is located on the Formula Bar. When you click this button, the Insert Function dialog box appears and guides you through the development of your formula.

A name is a word or string of characters in Excel that represents a cell, range of cells, formula, or constant value. By using names, you can make your formulas much easier to understand and maintain. You will use names in some of the formulas you create.

This training session is geared toward the user who is already familiar with creating formulas in Excel. If formulas are new to you, please attend the “Creating Basic Formulas” training session first, or contact icttraining@maxwell.syr.edu.
