Section breaks are used to change the layout or formatting of pages in your document. You can change the following formats for individual sections:

  • Margins
  • Paper size or orientation
  • Paper source for a printer
  • Page borders
  • Vertical alignment of text on a page
  • Headers and footers
  • Columns
  • Page numbering
  • Line numbering
  • Footnotes and endnotes

In this training session, we will go over the concepts of inserting various types of sections and how they can be used to enhance your document. For example:

  • You may have text in a document that is required to display with a portrait orientation, while the diagrams in your document require a landscape orientation. The only way to achieve this look in Word is to use section breaks.
  • You may want the first few pages of your document to be numbered using Roman numerals, while the rest of the page numbering should be formatted using an Arabic style. Again, the only way to do this is by incorporating sections.
  • By default, when you insert a header and footer, the content is the same throughout your document. If you need a unique header and footer to display on specific pages, you can utilize sections to make this happen.
  • Each document you create begins by using one column of text. Breaking up text into two columns, while keeping other parts of your page formatted as a single column, adds visual interest. Sections help you achieve this.
