Using the ruler in Word allows you to apply various paragraph formats to your documents. In this training session, you will learn what the symbols on the ruler mean, how to add custom indents and tab stops to the ruler, and how to make changes to them. In addition to regular left and right indents, which affect all lines on the left or right side of a paragraph, you will also apply the following:

  • Hanging indents – with these kinds of indents, the second and all of the following lines of a paragraph are indented more than the first.
  • First line indents – with these kinds of indents, the first line of a paragraph is indented more than the other lines in the paragraph.
  • Tab stops – tab stops allow you to add non-traditional tabs to your documents. You can format a tab to stop at a specific position on the ruler, for example, and have text that is typed at this position automatically center align. We will cover left, right, center and decimal tab stops.
    • The space between tabs can also show dots, dashes, or other “leader” characters to line up information. All you need to do is apply a “Dot Leader” tab stop. You will learn how to do this.
