Excel_2013_logoData validation is an Excel feature used to define restrictions on what data should be entered in a cell. You can configure data validation to prevent users from entering data that is not valid, or, you can allow users to enter invalid data but warn them when they try to type it in the cell. You can also provide messages to define what input you expect for the cell, and instructions to help users correct any errors.

In this training session, you will learn how to use the Data Validation dialog box to limit the type of content that can be entered into cells. You will set criteria under the Settings tab; set up a message to alert users when specific data is required in a cell (Input Message tab); and decide whether you will stop a user from entering invalid data, or allow the user to continue on even if invalid data was entered (Error Alert tab). You will also learn how to circle invalid data that was allowed to be entered – permitting you to analyze it later.

If you plan on using the same file for multiple purposes, and would like a separate file for each objective, consider turning the file into a template. Creating, saving and using an Excel template will also be covered.
